Trailnet, MoDOT and Metro Transit Kick Off Cyclist, Motorist and Pedestrian Safety

Trailnet, MoDOT and Metro Transit Kick Off Cyclist, Motorist and Pedestrian Safety

ST. LOUIS - Many Missourians walk or bicycle to get where they need to go. While both activities provide physical and health benefits, there is always the risk of serious or fatal injuries if pedestrian and cyclists come in contact with a motor vehicle.

Trailnet, Missouri Department of Transportation and Metro Transit are partnering to kick off the "Safe Roads for All" initiative today throughout May to enforce the need for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to share the road and be aware of one another's safety. Leaders of these transportation agencies led a safety ride and walk from the Missouri History Museum to the St. Louis Downtown Bicycle Station representing the importance of "sharing the road."

Susan Scott, a family victim who lost her son, spoke at this morning's news conference that kicked off the joint safety initiative. Her son was hit and killed by a drunk driver last year February while commuting on his bicycle.

St. Louis College of Pharmacy To Give Tips On Taking Medications in CWE Tuesday

St. Louis College of Pharmacy To Give Tips On Taking Medications in CWE Tuesday

ST. LOUIS-- More than a dozen student pharmacists from St. Louis College of Pharmacy, wearing their white coats, will be out tomorrow in the Central West End passing out tips on taking medications as prescribed.

"Since pharmacists are the most accessible health care providers in the community, it is important that you stop by your local pharmacy to get to know your pharmacist," says fourth-year student Alyse Battles. "Pharmacists use the month of October to showcase their contributions to health care and their commitment to serving patients."

Medication adherence is a huge problem in health care. For example:

-         As many as 75 percent of patients fail to take their medicine as prescribed.

-         A recent study publis hed in Pediatrics found that 20 percent of prescriptions written for children are never filled.

Homers For Health Raises Nearly A Half Million Dollars

Homers For Health Raises Nearly A Half Million Dollars

ST. LOUIS, MO (October 3, 2012) – The St. Louis Cardinals will announce Wednesday night in their final regular season game, the charitable totals from Homers for Health. This first-year fundraiser, benefitting the kids at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, raised more than $480,000 in pledges and corporate support.

The program was led by Cardinals sluggers Matt Holliday and David Freese, but every Cardinals home run contributed to the total. This year, the Cardinals crushed 159 homers (not including any hit in the final game) and each homer meant more than $3,000 to SSM Cardinal Glennon. “The program greatly exceeded our expectations for a first year campaign,” said Dan Buck, Executive Director of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation. “The Cardinals, especially Matt and David, have been amazing partners in this effort and we can’t thank the entire organization enough for getting the word out to Cardinals Nation,” Buck added.

St. Louisans Invited to “Pedal the Cause” for Local Cancer Research

St. Louis-- St. Louis is home to several world-class cancer facilities, including Siteman Cancer Center, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. The research conducted here will benefit cancer patients locally and around the country, and will receive a significant financial boost this October from the third annual Pedal the Cause cycling challenge. Several thousand cyclists and several hundred volunteers are needed to make this event a success.

Founded by Bill Koman, last year’s Pedal the Cause event raised $1,325,000 to help fund cancer research. 100% of fundraising proceeds is already at work towards winning the battle on cancer by researchers right here in our community. This was made possible by the efforts of more than 1,300 cyclists, 500 volunteers and 10,000 donors. More than 1,400 cyclists have already registered and begun fundraising for the 2012 event.
